Bar Beach - shore protection
other projects
One of Hitech's most high profile projects at the moment is a sea wall along Bar Beach, on Victoria Island, Lagos. This 'Shoreline Protection Works' involves the construction of a 1km-long sea defence to prevent further erosion of Bar Beach, which threatens Victoria Island – the downtown area of Lagos. The erosion problem is severe – roughly 100 metres of shore have been washed away in the last 20 years.

This is the first project of its kind in Nigeria, and the first in the whole of Africa to use advanced 'xblocs' (the large, x-shaped concrete blocks used to dissipate the energy of the waves). Xblocs are made under licence from Delta Marine Consultants. (DMC). Used in large numbers, xblocs create an interlocking armour designed to protect shores for the long term and under extreme conditions.

Overall, the project will involve roughly 5,000 of these xblocs, plus approximately 65,000 tons of rock and thousands of tons of sand. When complete, the top of the wall will be 4 metres above sea level. A new dual-carriageway road will then be built behind the sea wall.

The project began in December 2005 and is due for completion in December 2006.
